And the Webby for navigation goes to…..

IKEA and Flash.

As an information architect, I was never really comfortable with the Webbys having a category for navigation in their suite of awards. This year’s winner is a great example of why contests are not really indicators of quality and best practices. A contest has its place. It is a great opportunity to promote, share and market what you are doing. You can also tell people, ‘I’ve won awards’ which I know is a very popular activity, especially in the advertising world.

But the thing that makes me most uncomfortable is that every solution is about solving a problem for a specific context. When we assume that something can be solved in a blanketed way we get the very unfruitful Flash bad/Flash good discussion. (or something similar-if it’s not Flash, it’s something else)
