Buy Nothing, Get Arrested
Eschaton has the story of 4 Buy Nothing Day activists arrested for soliciting nothing in a Delaware mall.
Here’s a write up from the Delaware paper that picked up the story
“These people were in the mall and were observed talking to patrons and also had a camera in their possession,” Aviola said. “They were asked by management to leave the mall and they refused twice. They were told if they didn’t leave that they would be arrested.”
Aviola said a trooper walked the women to their vehicle.
White said that never happened. She maintains that they were walking to their car when troopers arrested them.
“We don’t understand because we were following directions to leave,” she said. “I don’t know how you can get to your car if you can’t walk to it through the mall parking lot.”
On a related note, fellow MN weblogger, Mark Gisleson expands on what would happen if we actually did buy nothing this holiday season in his Would a kids-only Xmas crash the economy?
The Gulf War shattered that [hiring] cycle, and it’s never come back, although we did see another depressed hiring cycle this year as employers waited, waited and waited for the election to be over before biting the bullet and hiring again.
Ouch.

Garrick, Garrick, Garrick. C’mon…don’t you know this is the new era? Bush’s ‘Ownership Society’ is in full effect. If you do not maintain a spending habit of 120% of your income, you will be detained.
With some seriousness, I did venture out Friday to pick up a few things. Even the ALWAYS annoyingly over-packed Ikea had open cashier lines. A later trip to Target for some boots for the young’un led to a quick in-and-out.
I think American’s, much to Shrub’s chagrin realize they can’t afford the ‘ownership society’ anymore ;o)
(And our family is also pushing the ‘for kids only’ thing this year…it’s a good idea)
