When I think back
On all the crap I dealt with in IE
It’s a wonder
I can think at all
And though my lack of decent surfing
Hasn’t hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

Google Chrome
They give us those nice bright tabs
They give us the protected memory
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, Oh yeah
I got a MacBook Pro
I love to surf on Facebook
So mama don’t take my Google Chrome away

While the rest of the press was covering Google’s Pay-Per-Action event and new Google Homepage themes, I received confirmation that Google is extending their popular AdWords and AdSense programs to the homeless sign holders on highway exits and stop lights.

By combining Google Maps & Traffics services, advertisers purchasing through Google’s programs will be able to select the exact geographic location their ads are presented. And in some select locations – who the ads are presented by.

John L, product manager for AdSense promoted the program, “This is the first effort of it’s kind and goes to the heart of our goal to not be evil.”

Until the inventory increases, many of the ads will be community service announcements and other messages from non-profit organizations.

UPDATE:
In reaction to today’s news, Mike Arrington wrote:

“This should be good for Google’s overall market share and long term revenue growth. Anything that drives fraud out of the network will get advertisers to actually spend more money, not less, as their ROIs increase.”

UPDATE 24 Sept 2009
More great signs.

With the increase in popularity of YouTube, and google video, is viral dead? Was it ever alive? I’ve met a ton of design “gurus” that flaunt the benefits of viral marketing.

My last recall of a successful campaign was the BMW campaigns produced by Snatch director Guy Ritchie. Did i buy a BMW. No. Did i change my attitude towards BMW. Yes. Do I ever want to buy a BMW. Probably not. Unless they can improve their product to look as good as an Audi and cost less. Sorry Fallon, great videos, it won you several Clios; however, It may have not served your client well. Or at least, this strategy might not work in the future.

My point is, it relies on all the trappings of advertisings old methodology, with less control. Web based advertising’s strengths lie in effective targeting of your potential buyers. Viral can never be effective without efficient targeting and tracking. It’s just dollars blowing in the wind.

Where does Google Video and YouTube come in? For once it is an effect warehousing of all the web flotsam that has crossed my desk in the past several years. I no longer recieve viral movies, I receive links to Youtube or Google Video. It may provide a place for viral to live again, but who gets the brand impression then? I’d say the host and not the virus.

Google’s stock started to fall for me when they turned Urchin into something less than useful. Looking around at their stable of apps; gMail, Google Analytics, gTalk, Froogle, Google Desktop, AdSense/AdWords, Google News, Google Maps, EPIC just to name a few – they’re over-saturated in my mind. Jumped the Shark if you will.

Then they go and do 2 stupid (not quite evil, yet) things:

Bring up RSS feeds in their search results.
The problem is, when you click on it, an RSS reader opens (if it exists). Now that’s great for my subscriber counts, but it’s not the behavior I expect when clicking on a blue search result link. Googlebot should be smart enough to figure this one out.

Preventing other search engines from accessing the Google Base
Seems to me there’s an inherent conflict of interest with Google being a search company and a publishing company – but only because they won’t let other robots into what they publish.

The next generation search engine can’t come soon enough. Maybe I’ll spend more time poking around IceRocket.
