A question to the community at large. I’ve been asked to give an opinion on the PNG file format. More specifically, if it would be worth it to include a PNG version of products in the process of creating web photo assets. Note that I’m referring to a large number of product images (in the hundreds of thousands), so we’re talking about a fundamental shift and yet another step in what can be a time-consuming process.

I’m familar with most of the pros/ cons of PNG and have utilized them for their benefits in gradients and tackled the whole IE transparency issue. The question is, would you bother with PNG?

Anyone using their service yet, or planning to? I’m loving the “free” Internet at my local coffee shops and libraries, but this could free me up to starting working anywhere at a cost I could take ($20/month versus $60-something for wireless PC cards)

I can imagine getting lost in the rain while walking is a scenario we’ve all been in numerous times and this is the gadget we’ve been waiting for.

My only question- how usable is this? I like the idea of watching people walk down the street staring up into their umbrella watching CNN or the lastest episode of Family Guy and running into people.

Looks to me like a great (yet annoying to consumers) way to advertise.

Would you buy it?

So I’m a Flash Guy, but here’s my current dilemma.

Currently I have no site of of my own. I used to host JakeFreeberg.com off a machine at home, but that’s just a bad solution. It allowed me to play with WordPress and MovableType installs and learn a few things, I really need to put some cash down and get myself a real web host.

I’m posting here in with the hope that someone here will recommend the perfect hosting solution for my needs, which I will list below:

It need to be affordable (None of what I plan to do with it will generate any revenue, but I am willing to sign up for a 2 year term and pay upfront if it’s a really good deal)

I’d like to start a new WordPress Blog at Jakefreeberg.com

I’d like to do a Drupal install with the hopes of building a site for a friend of mine who’s running for chair of an organization.

Both of the above require PHP and MySQL databases.

I’ve already purchased a .mn domain name for that campaign and need name server hosting to point that domain at the Drupal install.

I’ll most likely end up hosting other domains in the future and I’d like to have the ability to host many domains within this same account.

Knowledgeable, friendly telephone-based technical support is important

Easy to use Tools that allow me to manage file permissions, email, domains, etc.

I will probably end up hosting some video and audio which will require a lot of server space.

Things that I don’t care as much about:

Bandwidth (I probably won’t be getting that many hits)

Microsoft Server Software (I’ll avoid ASP and .Net)

Email accounts (most people have a half dozen already, but forwarding would be nice)

E-Commerce (If I sold anything I’d probably send people through Paypal or something)

So that’s about it.

I’m wondering who people have used, and what they’ve like and disliked about the services.

All help will be appreciated.

The Walker Art Center and AIGA is pairing up again to have their March graphic design lecture series. Insights usually host no surprises for me these days. You’ll have a mix of academia, hip, highly theoretical, and your dull lecturers. Normally I find my self saying, OK, ya, nice work. But it ends up feeling like an awkward meeting of two people who know the same people, but have nothing in common.

This often seems to happen for me when looking at print design again. I often wonder if we will ever get print designers on board. Last week Daniel Eatock gave a talk.

It was fresh for a change. Daniel Eatock is not necessarily a interactive designer. And i’ll say the first 6 minutes feel a bit staged to appear cutting edge, but the more I listened I appreciated the moto. Essentially a focus on fun and function, a reaction to the abundance of slick, overly produced work out there.

A few projects stripped away the excess of interactive design. His site is a good example.

In the end he recited a list of “no’s”. Amongst them “no flash”. As usual there were muffled murmurs. “no flash?” people whispered under their breath. Apparently the last hour didn’t stick… I can only hope that we as designers can remember that there is more than just aesthetics to design. I have to say thanks to Daniel. We need to be reminded once and a while that design is more than a visceral reaction. That concept and interaction can carry the weight of a message just as much as color and form.
