I’m sure you’ve read at least a dozen blog entries out there as to how ugly the London 2012 Olympic logo is. If you haven’t, here’s a few links to get you started:

@SpeakUp (Good overall overview and review)

@Typophile

@tailwind

I won’t waste another blog entry on talking about how much I love or hate the logo. However, I will take a moment to rant about the apparent lack of quality design critique out there. Most of the design-centric blogs covering the logo issue have 100+ comments each from fellow graphic designers. I’m saddened to see that only a small percentage take the time or effort to support their opinion with a foundation in design principles.

The ones that do seem to take some time to <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"">analyze the solution from a business perspective seem to ultimately come to the conclusion that it’s probably not that bad of a solution. See Armin’s post @SpeakUp (link above), the Tailwind link (also above) and perhaps the most sensible critique I’ve yet read by Bryan over at Coudal Partners for examples.

Yes, this *is* the internet and it was designed specifically for everyone to rant and rave with no rhyme or reason, so I suppose I’m arguing against the masses on this one. I just miss a damn good design critique.

There’s a graphic design joke that goes something like this:

DESIGNER: How’s it look?
CLIENT: Umm…good…but could you make the logo a bit bigger?

The great thing about jokes is how true they are.

Unlike the icon that is Kodak’s logo, Intel’s redesign is a much-needed modernization.Notice the dropped ‘e’ of the original Intel mark is gone. But, the most recognizable element from the “Intel Inside” brand – the unfinished brush-stroke circle – has been preserved. Transformed into arguably the best looking swoosh this side of 1999.

You know of any other examples of campaign marks that have been incorporated into owner’s brand?

Quick, whose name is on your digital camera?
Leica, Palm, Canon, Philips

Next, whose name is on your camera’s memory card?
Actually, I have no idea

Next, name an American company that built their name on photography film?
Kodak. Hey, is the film in my fridge still good?

I think you can see Kodak’s problem. They didn’t move fast enough to stay relevant in this new digital age. So, to get a foothold, they change their logo.

I find this interesting mainly because I don’t remember seeing the big red ‘K’ for years. Based on a quick glance of the Kodak website looks like it’s used only when they have enough vertical space. In all other cases, they use the wordmark.

Then again, I found this on digg linking to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle and haven’t been able to verify it. Hopefully, Kodak is really putting their money into making interesting things rather than changing their logo’s typeface.
