This evening on Marketplace, David Brown talked with Andrew Zolli on how to protect yourself from being outsourced, downsized, or simply trapped in an 85 sq. ft. cube mumbling about your stapler.
His suggestion - get a job building experiences (I’ve already got one. You?).
Product companies are adding services to their quiver, Service companies are adding holistic experiences to their quiver. He submitted Starbucks having a Director of Entertainment and Toys R Us’ Time Square flagship store.
He made an interesting point regarding Toys R Us. A couple years back, Wal-Mart decided to sell toys…cheap. Toys R Us knew they couldn’t compete on price, so they decided to compete on experience - thereby increasing their margin.

A fun follow up to this message, Toys R Us is dropping toys, and focusing on Baby stuff. Seems like they’ve tired of the fight with Wal-Mart and decided to take on Target. Good Luck to them and their flagship Manhattan store.
