MN-ASIS GIS – an Intro for Info Professionals
GIS – an Intro for Info Professionals
Geographic Information System (GIS) technology combines standard databases with maps and location-related information such as street addresses, ZIP codes, and GPS data. GIS is widely used in government, business, and education for managing geographically referenced data, for creating maps to show patterns and trends, and for conducting spatial analysis, such as market research.
Angela Lee, from ESRI, will provide an overview of GIS and the potential applications of GIS. Types of GIS software as well as sources of GIS data will be discussed.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Ramsey County has an amazing tool using GIS:

You can view the entirety of Ramsey County from ‘the air’ and then apply buildings, plot lines, ownership info, etc. Really impressive.
Alas, ESRI is the Microsoft of the GIS world - proprietary solutions/formats that cost a fortune. Consider some open source solutions (http://opensourcegis.org/, http://freegis.org/, http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/) - heck, attend the Open Source Geospatial conference to held in Minneapolis this June!! http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/mum/mtg2005.html
