Target sued over inaccessible web site
The San Francisco Chronicle reports on a blind UC Berkeley student’s lawsuit against Target regarding the fact that their website is inaccessible to the blind.
They’re hoping to turn this into a class action lawsuit.
The article mentions 1.3 million people in the US suffering from vision loss. It’s a shame corporations don’t see that number as a worthwhile demographic to target (pun intended) and instead have to be sued over it.

The interesing bit is Target.com is built on the Amazon.com platform. A cursory glance at Amazon’s source code does show the alt text for product images and action buttons.
Not that accessibility is limited to alt text, but its a start.
The SF Cronicle is a bit light on the technical issues. But Target has got to have a huge challenge to redevelop their site into accessible friendly. Only furthering the reasons why you should build it accessible friendly in the first place, rather than waiting to be sued.
