The Disposal Removal Experience: Tubs vs. 1-800-Got-Junk

At the last house we renovated, we rented a bunch of mini dumpsters from TUBS, both on the move-in and the move-out. Each dumpster was about $100 and we got to keep them for a week. It worked well for things like, “clean out the garage this weekend”.

On the downside, the dumpster truck consistently backed up into skinny driveway at 7am (BEEP BEEP BEEP) - despite the appointment scheduled for later in the day. The whole thing felt shady, dirty, and not quite right.

Last week, it was time to dispose of the 3 Muppet-skin shag carpets in our current place, I first thought of TUBS, but couldn’t remember how to get a hold of them (somehow, Google failed me - odd). I sent an email to our regular garbage people - who asked me to cut the carpets into 3ft*3ft squares and place in a box no heavier than one person can lift - and they’ll charge me $15 per box. Um, uh. No.

Next, I remembered 1-800-Got-Junk. Unlike TUBS, 1-800-Got-Junk does the lifting and toting for you. Their appointment scheduling is online, 2-hour blocks from today through the next couple of days. I picked a time late in the afternoon told them I had a bunch of carpets and completed the form.

10 minutes later, I get a call from their junk agents saying they’re in the neighborhood and could they stop by now. Sure. Cool. I get off the phone, walk to the garage, and there are 2 clean, twentysomething men in 1-800-Got-Junk polos awaiting my instruction. Brilliant.

I point to the carpets, they give me an estimate (based on how full they think the truck will get) and return to work. Twenty minutes later, they’re finished. Everything’s in the truck and the garage is garbage free. Fantastic. Painless. Sure, the truck was a little fuller than they estimated, but it was done and not even 10am.
