Twin Cities WiFi Distance Competition
A couple years back I worked at a wi-fi startup in Chicago. Our offices were on the 23rd floor of a building bordered by the Chicago River, the Loop, and Michigan Avenue. Across the river to the north was a Best Western with an upcoming conference and a need for internet access. The conference room was in the hotel’s basement.
The hardware guys in the company set up an 2-foot antenna with a dish and sent an 802.11b signal across the river into the window of the Best Western’s basement.
A similar challenge is in the works here in our neighborhood. The Twin Cities Wireless Users Group is hosting a similar challenge.
There’s an access point on the top of the Pillsbury Tower - the goal to see how far away you can be from it and still download a 1meg file.
Results to be announced on Sept. 8th. For the specifics, check out the full contest information.
