Web 2.1 right around the corner?
Web 2.0…Web 2.0…Web 2.0…Web 2.0…I think we’re all getting tired of hearing that.
But, hopefully that means we’re on the verge of Web 2.1
Case in point: Blingo.com (< -- my affiliate link ;o)
Blingo is a front-end to Google. You use it to search google, but the difference is that they give away random prizes throughout the day. Smells like web 1.0 pre-bubble, eh?
So, what's next? My prediction:
- Web 2.1 – VC dries up. When every drop-shaddowed, AJAX-powered, community link sharing site has been funded, they’ll be done handing out money for this round.
- Web 2.2 – Flies begin droppping. Hmm…what do you mean our business model of giving away prizes for searching the web isn’t sustainable?
- Web 2.3 – the layoffs.
- Web 2.4 – things level off to a sane level.
- Web 3.0 – New buzzwords. New VC! Repeat ad nauseam.

If Web 1.0 was marketing, and Web 2.0 is applications, my prediction is Web 3.0 will be all about identity.
Garrick, what do you mean? Like, the ‘packaging’ of the user experience or ‘branding’ (ugh!)? Or are you referring to the user? ‘Identity’ in what sense?
Mark, good question – Identity as in the ‘who you are’ vs. ‘who I am’ and how that concept is exchanged between us, organizations we do business with, and the organizations they do business with.
