URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/mima-why-we-love-the-web/
DESCRIPTION:March 23 - 5:30 @ Mill City Museum Ready to share your bookmarks with the MIMA community at large? At our first-ever "open mike night," it's your turn to tell the world what you think is the best (and maybe the worst) of the web. Come armed with your favorite URLs and you'll get tres minutos (that's 3 minutes, my friends) to share, dish, convince and captivate. The only caveat? No tootin' your own horn. You can't promote your own site, your employer's site or a site you've had the pleasure of working on. Them's the rules. No exceptions. Our salon moderator will be MIMA board member Kristina Halvorson. Kristina's company Brain Traffic provides interactive content strategies and killer copy for web sites everywhere. And hey - if you have a gong she can borrow for the evening, let us know. Registration and more info at MIMA.org

SUMMARY:UPA-MN Tour of Mayo Clinic Usability and Innovation Labs
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/upa-mn-tour-of-mayo-clinic-usability-and-innovation-labs/
DESCRIPTION: Please join us on Tuesday, April 5th, for a visit to the Mayo Clinic. Just as seasons change, so do usability teams.  A few years ago, the team at Mayo Clinics in Rochester was discovering what the world of usability was all about.  Since our chapter's last visit, the team and facilities at Mayo have undergone a transformation. Thomas Suther, a founding member of the UPA-Minnesota chapter, will explain some of the changes and give us a tour of the usability labs. Then we'll move to another building on campus and have a tour of the SPARC Innovation lab.  This lab is a living experiment in practicing medicine, and an interesting twist on the concept of usability testing. In this lab, Jenny Dusso will explain how ideas are brought forward and tested in exam rooms, with real physicians and patients. As an added bonus, Caroline Jarrett, a usability specialist from the United Kingdom, will join us for our meeting.  Caroline's specialty is forms design, and she will be in Rochester teaching forms classes at Mayo.  She has offered to share a few insights from 'across the pond' on usability and UPA chapters. If you, or someone you know, would like to attend, please register by emailing events@upamn.org. When RSVPing, please also indicate if you are interested in driving or riding in a carpool down to Rochester.  If you offer to drive, please indicate how many passengers you could take.  We will attempt to loosely coordinate carpooling efforts in advance. RSVP by sending your name and company name or business affiliation to: events@upamn.org. Non-member visitors are welcome, but are asked to pay $10.00 to attend each meeting. DESCRIPTION: 5:00 - 6:30 pm, Thursday, April 21, 2005 402 Walter Library, University of Minnesota, East Bank Join Steven Clift as he ties together the first decade of "e-democracy" with a citizen-centric agenda for building community life and democracy in the the 21st century.  The Internet allows citizens to become everyday citizens "anywhere, any time" by deeply connecting them to things local not just global.     What ideas, lessons, and models can we import and combine in order to strengthen the quality of life and democracy in our local communities? After a global speaking tours across 25 countries, places as diverse as Mongolia, Iceland, Lebanon, and South Korea, Clift connects the best online realities in an optimistic recipe that will help us defeat Internet-empowered "politics as usual" and counter the emerging virtual civil war among partisans online. SUMMARY:Insights 2005: Antenna Design, New York
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/insights-2005-antenna-design-new-york/
DESCRIPTION: Masamichi Udagawa and Sigi Moeslinger founded Antenna Design with the goal of making people’s engagement with technological objects and environments more exciting. They are achieving this ambitious objective through a combination of commercial and public projects that range from the redesign of the New York City subway cars and ticketing machines and the creation of custom monitors, screen displays, and information kiosks for Bloomberg to a series of interactive installations such as Power Flower, a window display for Bloomingdale’s that is activated by passersby, and their recent winning entry in the Civic Exchange competition, an interactive information installation for visitors and inhabitants of Lower Manhattan. With backgrounds in industrial design and digital technology, their projects represent a successful merger of elegant product form, informational clarity, and sophisticated interactivity. Their work has won numerous awards, including recognition from I.D., Business Week, and Wired magazines. In 2003 they were finalists for the National Design Award in Product Design from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. SUMMARY:Insights 2005: Maureen Mooren and Daniel van der Velden, MM&DVDD, Amsterdam
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/insights-2005-maureen-mooren-and-daniel-van-der-velden-mmdvdd-amsterdam/
DESCRIPTION: Daniel van der Velden is a graphic designer and writer based in Amsterdam who, since 1998, has been collaborating with Maureen Mooren on a variety of design and editorial projects. Among a new generation of influential Dutch graphic designers, they have developed a reputation for work that engages and challenges its readers by making aspects of writing, editing, and authorship commensurate with designing. This approach can be seen in their design of Archis, a magazine about architecture, culture, and urbanism, which appropriates and thus recontextualizes the stylistic conventions and typographic formats of various other magazines. They are particularly interested in the relationship and possibilities of fiction within the realm of information and in the reconsideration of preexisting graphic forms, whether a newspaper, advertisement, letter, diary, and so on. For instance, their series of invitations for exhibitions at the art gallery Room recycles the formats and contents of letters, conveying practical information within a more compelling story. As van der Velden notes, “The instability that occurs with this strategy is one that is, I think, always happening when something ‘boring’ like some dates and names is uploaded with something thrilling, or playful.” Since 2003 he has directed the Meta Haven project, a comprehensive national identity system for the Principality of Sealand, the world’s smallest “micronation.” Founded in the late 1960s and located on a formerly abandoned World War II anti-aircraft platform in the North Sea, Sealand garnered recent worldwide publicity with the establishment of HavenCo, a data-hosting services company. It’s a kind of data haven, or safe harbor for information, that claims to be the world’s first and only true market environment for Web business free from security and regulatory issues of conventional nation-states. SUMMARY:Insights 2005: Paul Sahre, The Office of Paul Sahre, New York
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/insights-2005-paul-sahre-the-office-of-paul-sahre-new-york/
DESCRIPTION: After a few unsatisfying stints designing for others, Paul Sahre established his own design studio, first in Baltimore and then in New York, where he has been since 1995. Consciously maintaining a small office, he has nevertheless established a large presence in American graphic design. The balance he strikes, whether between commercial and personal projects or in his own design process, is evident in such things as the physical layout of his office—part design studio, part silkscreen lab where he prints projects for himself—or in his desire “for equal parts logic and intuition” in the work. His silkscreened posters for the Fells Point Corner Theatre in Baltimore provided him a much-needed creative outlet and garnered him early professional visibility with their rough-edged, expressive typography. His more recent work, such as book covers for author Rick Moody’s novels Demonology and The Ice Storm or his design of the book American Photography 19, exhibit a crisper, more refined typographic and photographic approach, and point to a more editorial or authorial direction. In fact, in 2003, he coauthored with Danny Gregory Hello World: A Life in Ham Radio, a book based on a collection of QSL cards, which amateur radio enthusiasts exchange after communication with other operators around the world. URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/insights-2005-john-christakos-and-maurice-blanks-blu-dot-design-minneapolis/
DESCRIPTION: Blu Dot designs and manufactures modern furniture and furnishings. Its founding partners, John Christakos, Maurice Blanks, and Charlie Lazor—whose backgrounds range from architecture and art to marketing—created the company in Minneapolis with the desire to make quality modern design available to everyday people. Their humanist and populist approach to modern furnishings dovetailed with the democratization of design begun in the 1990s and seen in the success of mass-market retailing, design-oriented publishing, domestic-enrichment programs, and home-improvement schemes. Blu Dot has produced several lines of furniture, such as its Chicago line of shelving, the Modulicous collection of bedroom furnishings, or the more recent Buttercup lounge chairs, which are sold in small retail shops and by major retailers nationwide. It also creates furnishings for special projects such as the dormitories of a new student housing complex at MIT designed by Steven Holl, or a recent commission for retail fixtures for Gap Kids stores. They have created and cultivated a brand—including a series of film shorts for nontraditional marketing—that has merged humor and wit with products that balance form and function—without sacrificing one of the basic tenants of modernism: good design./blockquote> Tuesday, May 24, 2005 7:00 pm $20 ($10 Walker and AIGA members; full-time students) More Info at walkerart.org

They will be sharing some of the highlights from a day-long tutorial they'll be conducting at the Montreal UPA International Conference in July. For the chapter meeting we'll only be able to scratch the surface of the topic, but the information is sure to be valuable. You'll gain insight on how to provide truly accessible Web design through demonstrations of adaptive technology, references to case studies, and a short discussion of how disabled users approach the Web. Nicole and Phil will also highlight some issues to consider around designing for users with disabilities; such as balancing accessibility with team needs, usability, and project timelines. They'll also briefly discuss what lessons can be transferred to other types of interface design projects. SUMMARY:UPA-MN A Case Study for Strategic Usability Success
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/upa-mn-a-case-study-for-strategic-usability-success/
DESCRIPTION: Successful collaboration on large projects requires an approach to user-centered design that distinguishes project roles and responsibilities. Jennifer Bohmbach, Susan Dray, and Lyle Kantrovich will present this case study showing an example of bridging corporate cultures for a more holistic UCD approach. They ’ll outline how three firms collaborated on a large website redesign, following a User-Centered Design approach in a company where UCD isn’t yet commonplace. About Our Speakers and The Topic Jennifer Bohmbach was formerly the Experience Design Practice Director at JWT, and is currently Vice President of Information Architecture at Sun Microsystems. Since 1979, Dr. Susan Dray has worked in the field of human factors to increase the quality and intuitiveness of user interface designs for users around the world. She has worked as both an internal and external consultant, and combines expertise in interface evaluation, usability evaluation, and contextual and ethnographic research with a cross-cultural and organizational perspective. As President of Dray & Associates, Inc., she consults internationally on interface design and usability. She has evaluated and helped redesign user interfaces for all types of websites, desktop and Web applications, as well as both hardware and software consumer products and technical equipment. She specializes in international user studies, and has conducted user research in 17 countries, including one of the largest international usability evaluations ever done - studying 120 users in 8 countries in Europe and Asia. Lyle Kantrovich is the User Experience Director at Cargill where he leads an internal team that provides consulting and training in usability and user centered design. He enjoys seeing business clients realize the value of user-centered design. His experiences include design for web, handheld, and client-server applications. Lyle is President of the Minnesota UPA Chapter, a SIG-CHI member, and a regular contributor to Information Architecture discussions on SIGIA-L. The target audience is twofold: folks who are scoping out potential careers and folks who want to stay up on things in case someone at work asks and/or they are expected to become (or know) an expert in a given area. The format is informal, roundtable discussion. We will ask each speaker to spend 30 minutes answering the following questions: · Who are you? · What do you do? · How did you get there? · How could I do or learn to do what you do? · If I needed to hire you or someone like you, what should I know to make me a smart consumer? Then we’ll open it up for questions from attendees. The August speaker is Jerry Baldwin and we’ve asked Jerry to approach this a little differently. Jerry is an expert at calculating the value of his library. He has spoken to groups across the US and has written articles on the topic of detailing the value of a library and return on investment (ROI). This should be an interesting session for anyone who has (or might have) to prove the worth of their library to folks making the funding decisions. We’ve asked Jerry to focus on his work with ROI when addressing the questions above. Here are the details: Date & Time: 5:00 – 6:30 Tuesday August 9 (speaker starts at 5:30) Place: Pad Thai 1659 Grand Ave just west of Macalester College (the old Red Fish Blue) RSVP: please send us a note if you will be coming atreacy@treacyinfo.com Cost: None – in fact ASIST will pick up some appetizers; Pad Thai serves wine, beer, and nonalcoholic beverages (drinks are on you).

The dream is that there’s this group of your most loyal customer, all hanging out online, talking about how great you are and how to get the most out of your product. And then? Then new people come. They read. They listen. And they buy. Welcome to the business application for online communities. What are they? Who uses them? How does social networking affect your business, from sales to marketing to HR? At our September salon, Nina Hale will lead a discussion on current trends, new communities, failed and failing communities. We’ll debate how online strategists can (or can’t) create and guide a community which by its very definition has to be maintained by the users. And we’ll try to come away feeling a bit more able to advise our companies on how to respond to this phenomenon." URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/archive/upcoming-mima-event-low-tech-customer-insights-for-high-tech-impact/
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday, November 15, Julia Curtiss is speaking at the next MIMA event at the James J. Hill Library (directions) in downtown St. Paul. Expect to learn: "To put it simply, technology has changed the way we market. Customers gather information from multiple channels and expect it to be customized. This makes it critical for you to be able to answer these questions: Who are your customers? How do they make purchase decisions? Once you're armed with accurate customer personas and a map of customer purchase processes, you can strategically deliver the right information at the right time using the right channel." Registration begins at 7:30 am Presentation is at 8 am Networking is at 9:15 am The cost is $20 for Members/$40 for non-Members.

SUMMARY:New Minneapolis Based Advanced Flash/Flex Programmer’s Group Forming
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/archive/new-minneapolis-based-advanced-flashflex-programmers-group-forming/
DESCRIPTION:Danny Patterson left this post on the FlashMN mailing list Yesterday: We're forming a new group in the twin cities that is focusing on Flash and Flex programming topics. This group is in no way trying to take over the FlashMN group, but should be seen as a compliment to an already great Flash group. The new group is dedicated to programmers and programming topics and takes on a study group approach as opposed to the lecture style of the FlashMN meetings. The Flash Platform now includes a wide variety of designers and developers and I feel that the two flash groups are better equipped to meet the needs of both types of Flash professionals. If you're interested in this new group, please check out our web site (www.mnswf.com) and sign up on the mailing list. Our kickoff meeting is Dec 5th and will be held at Target headquarters. (Ham in the Fridge has sponsored food and beverage.) RSVP is required due to security restrictions. To RSVP, please send an email to info@mnswf.com, subject line: "MN.SWF RSVP - 2006-12-05 - first name, last name." Thanks, Danny

SUMMARY:New FlashMN Leadership starting with a CS3 Demo
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/archive/new-flashmn-leadership-starting-with-a-cs3-demo/
DESCRIPTION:There's been a change in leadership at Minnesota's Flash User Group. Nate Pacyga had been leading the group for a while and decided to step down as manager. He put out a message to the group in the hopes that he'd find someone to take the reigns. Luckily, two people were interested in managing the group. Judah Frangipane has worked in the web industry for the last 12 years. During that time he worked at Roxio and Parsons and is currently employed at Yellow Book. He's been using and teaching Flash for the last five years. Judah's worked on some Flash projects that you can see here http://www.drumbeatinsight.com Saviz Artang has worked in technology for about 12 years. The first five years were at Intel Corp. in CA and the rest at Thomson Corp in Eagan, MN where he is currently holding a technology manager position. Saviz has been involved with Flash for the past two years making a toddler PC game. You can see his work at: http://artangco.com Saviz and Judah are hoping to draw some big numbers for their first meeting as leaders on Wednesday, April 18th. They're going to have Dustin Tauer from Easel Training demonstrating some of the exciting new features in CS3 including new features of Flash CS3, Photoshop CS3, Illustrator CS3 and After Effects CS3. He'll focus on work flows between applications within the new Creative Suite. After the presentation they'll have a copy of CS3 for people to play around with. (Note: there will be armed guards protecting the CS3 cds.) As always, free pizza, beer and pop will be provided. Also, They are taking requests for demonstration of any features or products. Feel free to post you requests to the FlashMN Yahoo Group.

URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/archive/twin-cities-ia-meetup-tues-nov-6-5pm-the-local-social-networks/
DESCRIPTION:This month's topic at for the IA meetup at The Local is social networks with special guests Bruno Borzstein from Curbly.com, Jon Dahl from Slantwise Design - developer of fanchatter.com among others -, and Katie Ware. Just in time for our conversation, Google announced their Open Social project and the Facebook backlash begins "I think Facebook is moving away from their efficient design and starting to get caught up in the short-term page view trap....If you want to build the best social network out there make it the easiest to use with the least page view refreshes. Please God." - Jason Calacanis At this point, I believe Facebook is more interested in building a highly-targeted ad delivery silo, and is less interested in connecting people. UPDATE: From Katie Ware: "If it helps, my spin on social networking is that I've worked on incorporating social networking 'activities" into brand sites like www.longliveyourdog.com"

Here are details of the meeting: *Tuesday, Feb. 512 *5:00-7:00 p.m. *at the Local in downtown Minneapolis (www.the-local.com, 931 Nicollet Mall) Brits in downtown Minneapolis (1110 Nicollet Ave, http://www.britspub.com/) -- (Note: Look for the table sign. SUMMARY:Flashbelt is right around the corner
URL;VALUE=URI:http://mnteractive.com/?p=1071
DESCRIPTION:The biggest, best Adobe Flash Conference to ever be held in the Twin Cities is happening the second week in June (8th-11th) at the Metrodome Holiday Inn. Flashbelt's line up of speakers, topics, and workshops is as good as any other conference you might consider flying out of town to attend. I had to go New York a few years ago to see people like Erik Natzke, Rob Reinhardt and Jared Tarbell speak. These and many other nationally known guys will all be at Flashbelt with our home town Flash hot shots tackling both cutting edge Flash Platform topics like AIR and 3D in Flash, as well as the things you might be trying to study up on like Actionscript 3 and Game Production. Check out the line up I've been going for the last few years and it's always been a really good time. The networking opportunity alone is invaluable. Also, plan on consuming at least $80 worth of free food and drinks. Last time I checked, there were only 100 tickets left and you'll be get a copy of Flash CS3 Professional Video: Studio Techniques for signing up in May. They added a new video workshop with the author of that book and I'm sure it will be popular. There are a few different pricing options. Hope to see you there.
